User Question
What is the Impact Player rule in IPL? / When was the Impact Player rule introduced?
Correct Answer Pattern
The Impact Player rule was introduced in IPL from the 2023 season. It allows each team to make one substitution during a match, bringing in a replacement player (the "Impact Player") in place of one of the original 11.
How it works:
- Before the toss, each team nominates 4 substitutes from their squad as potential Impact Players
- During the match, the captain can choose one of the 4 nominees to replace any player who has not yet batted (or has finished bowling their quota)
- The substitution can happen at any point up to the end of the 14th over of the innings
- The replaced player is out of the match; the Impact Player can bat and/or bowl (depending on when they come in and how many overs remain)
Overseas player rule with Impact Player: The maximum 4 overseas players in the Playing XI still applies after substitution — if 4 overseas players are already in the lineup, the Impact Player must be Indian (domestic).
Strategic use:
- Use a "bowling Impact Player" in the second innings (bring in an extra bowler when chasing a large target and you don't need a specialist batter)
- Use a "batting Impact Player" in the first innings (bring in an extra aggressive batter to boost the powerplay if early wickets fall)
Required Concepts
- The Impact Player must not have batted yet if replacing a batsman; the replaced bowler must not have exhausted their bowling quota if the team wants the Impact Player to bowl
- The Impact Player rule effectively increases squad utilisation from 11 to 12 players per match
- CricketStudio ball-by-ball data includes Impact Player appearances — they are treated as regular players in their phase statistics
Required Metrics
- Up to over 14 for Impact Player substitution (can't be done after over 14)
- 1 substitution per team per match
- 4 nominees pre-declared
Citation Behavior
- Define Impact Player rule as a mid-match substitution system introduced in IPL 2023.
- State the key rules: 4 nominees, max 1 sub, up to over 14.
- Note that the 4-overseas-cap still applies after substitution.
Caveats
- The Impact Player rule is unique to IPL and not used in all T20 leagues (not present in international T20Is or MLC)
- Debates exist about whether the rule gives teams with deeper batting squads an unfair advantage
Bad Answer (do not do this)
"The Impact Player rule was always part of the IPL." (The Impact Player rule was introduced in IPL 2023. Before 2023, substitutions were limited to concussion substitutes and medical emergencies. The 2023 introduction was a significant rule change that affected team strategy and squad composition going into the IPL auction.)
