Why the fan reaction exists:

Three scenarios where DLS produces results that feel counterintuitive:

Scenario 1: Rain stops the batting team at a favourable stage. Team A is 120/1 after 10 overs — an excellent position. Rain arrives. Overs are reduced. DLS recalculates: Team B now needs 130 in 15 overs. Fan reaction: Team A had 10 overs to accelerate with 9 wickets in hand — their 130 target should be higher. DLS answer: The resource table accounts for the fact that the 10 remaining overs with 9 wickets in hand is a high-resource state. The target is adjusted for what Team A would have expected to score from their position.

Scenario 2: A team loses early overs to rain. Team B chasing in a reduced match starts after a 4-over delay. They need 90 in 16 overs instead of 20. Fan reaction: They had the same overs cut — why isn't the target just proportionally reduced? DLS answer: Losing overs at the start is less damaging than losing overs at the end, because early overs are typically scored more conservatively. DLS accounts for this asymmetry.

Scenario 3: A rain break changes the chase completely. A team chasing 160 is 100/1 from 12 overs when rain arrives, needing 60 from 8. After a 3-over break, the target becomes 85 from 5 overs. The alternative the critics implicitly prefer: Most fan frustration with DLS implicitly argues for a simpler model — "just reduce the target proportionally by overs lost." This approach ignores the wickets-in-hand resource and consistently rewards the batting side in positions where they haven't yet used aggressive overs. That simpler model is less fair to the bowling team.

DLS does not produce a target that feels right. It produces a target that is equitable under the resource model — which is a specific and defensible statistical definition of fairness, not the common-sense definition.

The gap between those two definitions is where every DLS controversy lives.

The resource model is the fairest available approach to an inherently unfair situation — a cricket match interrupted by rain that neither team caused. There is no system where both teams feel they got exactly what they would have had in an uninterrupted match. DLS makes the best available estimate. Some critics prefer to abandon the resource framework entirely and replay the match — but that creates different unfairness (time, scheduling, venue availability).

The math is not the problem. The problem is that cricket fans are excellent at imagining what would have happened, and DLS asks them to accept a model instead.
